Mr Reddy message about the Tsunami warning

Urgent Message from the Principal- 5 March 2021

Kia ora koutou

Today, Aucklanders were alerted to a Tsunami warning (large wave which moves onto the beach or river), due to an earthquake near the Kermedec islands which is about 968 kms away. I want to assure our children and whanau that you are safe, especially as you are living in Mt Roskill and away from beaches on the East coast. The CIVIL defence warning via text message at 11.35 am explains the areas that need to be evacuated. Please assure children that they are safe as some may already be anxious due to this week’s lockdown.

What you need to know:

Kiwis located in coastal areas between the Bay of Islands and Whangarei, between Matata and Tolaga Bay, and on Great Barrier Island must immediately evacuate to higher ground.

A tsunami warning has been issued after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake hit near the Kermedec Islands at about 8:30am on Friday morning.

Earlier on Friday there was a "severe" 7.1 magnitude earthquake 105km east of Te Araroa on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island and a 7.4 magnitude earthquake at the Kermedecs.

Kiwis are urged to follow official advice from the National Emergency Management Agency - https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/.
